Everyone is kind, attentive, patient, and treats residents with the same respect and compassion they would show their own family. Entrusting the care of a parent or spouse to a memory care community is a big decision. From independent living communities, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, other memory care programs, and hospice care, we've managed loved ones through them all. Our initial criteria for Mom was to make sure she was safe and comfortable, physically and cognitively. We really didn't anticipate the impact of a truly "active" and engaged community. What really stands out is the activity-based daily agenda. There is always something happening - activities, games, music, exercise, social interaction, and opportunities to stay engaged. Their program creates a positive, active environment and helps give each day a sense of purpose and routine. We were concerned that ActivCare Mission Bay wasn't close to where we live but we make the drive 4-5 days per week. We've become part of the community of care. We've gotten to know the staff, residents and many of the visiting families. On most days, we're actively participating in the daily schedule of events. Most importantly, the residents are treated like family. The staff take the time to get to know each resident, understand their individual needs and personalities, and make them feel safe, comfortable, and valued. My mom spent approximately three months at ActivCare after suffering a stroke, during an incredibly difficult and uncertain time for our family. From the moment she arrived, she was treated with nothing but love, respect, compassion, and exceptional care. ActivCare is an outstanding facility, with a staff who cares deeply about their residents and their well-being. The staff took the time to understand my mom as an individual; her personality, her needs, what made her comfortable, and the level of support she needed at that particular point in her recovery. They were consistently professional, loving, patient, attentive, and kind. I always felt that they were looking out for her best interests and were on top of her needs. I was very close to my mom's care throughout her time at ActivCare and visited frequently. The team was always incredibly welcoming and considerate toward me as well. They encouraged me to spend as much time with my mom as I wanted, to take her outside, and simply to be with her. Just as importantly, they supported me as her daughter as I navigated some very difficult decisions about her care. Having a team I could trust during that period gave me tremendous peace of mind. There are so many wonderful people who deserve recognition. Bee Bee was incredibly special to my mom and our family, and I am so grateful for the love and care she showed her. Sofia was also wonderful, as were the nursing staff, including Nika, Christina and Karen. And Kim and Bianca and others at the front desk always greeted us with such warmth and kindness. Together, they helped make my mom's experience feel less like being in a facility and much more like being in a home at a time when she couldn't be in her own. I also appreciated the thoughtful touches ActivCare provided to help residents maintain a sense of normalcy and dignity. Even things such as having salon services available for hair and nails made a difference. It gave my mom opportunities to feel cared for, look good, and feel good about herself during her stay. My mom has since moved out of ActivCare, but for a very positive reason: she has progressed to the point that she no longer requires memory care and has transitioned to an assisted living community that better matches her current needs. Her move in no way diminishes how grateful I am for the care she received at ActivCare. In fact, ActivCare was exactly what she needed during that chapter of her recovery, and I will always be thankful that she was surrounded by people who cared for her so genuinely when she needed it most. When you are making care decisions for a parent, you are entrusting other people with someone you love deeply. I never took that responsibility lightly. At ActivCare, I felt that my mom was known, valued, respected, protected, and cared for as a person, not simply as a patient/resident. The resident caretakers are exceptional and made her feel like she was part of a community. When she first arrived, she was able to engage in all of the activities. She especially loved the music programs and the morning yoga routines. They also allowed her to bring her small organ into her private room (with headphones to not disturb other residents) so that she could continue to play music and have her "best friend" with her. The activity directors provided daily engagement so she never sat alone in her room. It was so convenient to have their amazing "in house" doctor take care of her medical needs so we did not have to transport her to medical appointments. When we had questions or concerns, the executive team would meet with us in person (or on zoom for family members out of town) to address our mother's needs. Also, the surrounding neighborhood has a beautiful park, Peets coffee and nearby restaurants that I could take my mom on walks, when I visited, which made it so convenient to do personal outings. As she progressed through the stages of memory loss, they continued providing the daily support she needed until the very end of her life treating her with the upmost respect.
